Natural Ways to Prevent Pimples

Pimples – the ins and outs

What are pimples

It is a small pustule or papule, a small skin lesion or inflammation of the skin.

How are pimples formed:

There are pores which are minute openings on the surface of your skin and in these pores, there are follicles.

Follicle = Oil gland + Hair

From the oil gland, sebum is released – which is the body’s natural oil – and it travels onto the skin. This helps to keep the skin lubricated and soft.

Pimples form when dead skin cells mix with excess sebum produced by the skin. This mixture plugs the pore, causing swelling. Bacteria can grow in the mix and lead to infection and pus a.k.a pimples.

Pimples are highly prominent during puberty. More sebum is produced by the sebaceous gland during puberty. This further worsens the blockage that has already formed by the dead skin cells that are left behind with the sticky sebum by accumulating behind it.

Home remedies for pimples:

DISCLAIMER: Before commencement of such home remedies, it is important to note that certain ingredients on your face may cause allergies or redness due to their natural properties.

To prevent any potential complications, it is important to do a patch test before using any ingredients.

  • Apply a small amount on your hand then wash it off.
  • Wait for 48 hours and see if you develop a rash or not before proceeding accordingly.

Do not use mixtures of natural ingredients unless you have done the patch test on all ingredients separately.

If you do have an allergy, put ice on your skin to subside it. Experts recommend using a gentle cleanser and allergen-free moisturizer. If the rash still persists, see a skin specialist.

Additional tips:

Dry skin types

If you have dry skin or on acne medication, avoid fruit extracts, potato or tomato juice or lime juice on the skin. This may make the skin drier or even irritated.

Oily skin types

IF you have oily skin, avoid using cleansing milk and oils on the skin. These will clog pores and increase whiteheads. Know the ingredients that are suitable for your skin type.

Makeup users

For makeup users, make sure to wipe off ALL makeup. Areas such as the hairline and under the chin/neck are often overlooked. These areas can accumulate dirt and form acne easily.

Shaving

For guys that shave, do note to pat your face down after you shave and not rub a towel all over your face roughly. Rubbing your face can lead to ingrown hairs that are stuck in your pores which can lead to pimples. Also, make sure to moisturize your skin after as shaving cream are often alcohol-based which leaves your skin dry.

Do not touch your face!

Avoid touching your face throughout the day as your fingers accumulate dirt, dust and bacteria over time. By touching/rubbing your face too much, you can leave dirt over your pores clogging them.

Exfoliating

Hydrating face exfoliation helps to remove dirt. After that, the use of toner aids in pore closing before a moisturizer is used to restore pH balance of the skin, which is supposed to be slightly acidic.
